We are often asked to furnish solutions to architects.  These applications run the gamut from stairways, to internal and external design elements (such as hardwood columns for churches), laminated arches for post and beam houses, door and entry systems,  commercial display projects, and more.

The stairway below (three images) is an example of our work.  The basic steel, welded stairs were topped with solid ash, bolted to the steel tread from below.  The curving, carved handrail was developed by first fastening the first layer of ash to the steel sub handrail, and then laminating layers from the sides and finally hand shaping the contour.  We completed the construction in our shop, then delivered and installed the finished stair into the home.  We then completed the installation with matching ash landing and handrail, and the ash paneling around the circular opening between floors.  The stair is approximately 60 inches in diameter.

A.R. Foss was contracted to create the bell tower atop the famous Trapp Family Lodge.   The original lodge was lost to fire in the early 1980s.  The family rebuilt the lodge soon after.  The bell tower was constructed to architectural specifications, and is solid western redwood, left in its natural state to age and oxidize to its current gray patina.  Redwood was chosen for its natural resistance to weather.   We added the solid copper finial which is topped by a solid redwood ball.   The tower was completed with the installation of a working bell.

Finally, here is a rare image of newel posts under construction at our shop.  These were for a customer in Nantucket, and are constucted out solid poplar, laminated and turned to achieve the resulting shape.  These were created to architectural specification, and of note is that on the island of Nantucket, there are strict zoning codes.  The design and size had to pass historical guidelines.   To learn more about our architectural products and projects please telephone or email us.
